Story

Lapsang Souchong also known as 'smoked tea' or ‘Zhenshan Xiaozhong’ in Mandarin, originated from a small village called Tong Mu Guan Village, part of the Quyi Mountains in Fujian Province. The Wuyi Mountains is now the most renowned area to source Lapsang which is a pocket of clay soil mountains in Northern Fujian. We always recommend first enjoying these teas black, to capture the true essence in flavour, however, this tea can equally be enjoyed with a splash of milk.

The secret to its significant flavour lies in its drying process that was established during the Qing era. The pine cones were introduced to the tea flavour during the “kill green” process when the teas are suspended in their most vulnerable state. The leaves are placed in special bamboo baskets over pinewood or pinecone fires to infuse the unique smokey pine flavours into the outer layers of each leaf. This process of “Smoke-drying” tea leaves became the most conventional drying method from 1850 onwards, as it was found to dramatically speed up the drying process to meet the tea production demands.
