Story
Mate (drink)
Mate (pronounced mah-tay) is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink. It is made by soaking dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis, in hot water and is served with a metal straw in a container typically made from a calabash gourd (the mate proper), but also in some areas made from a cattle horn (guampa). Its consumption has been traced as far back as 1690.
This herbal mate can be used as a base for any combination of health and flavour benefits, a practice common in Paraguay where people acquire herbs from a local yuyera (herbalist) and use the mate as a base for their herbal infusions.
