The Story

The background story of Earl Grey tea is a tale of murky waters, and there have always been several theories about its origin. The most popular one attributes the creation of Earl Grey tea to Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister in the 1830s. According to the legend, a Chinese mandarin gifted him a blend of tea flavored with bergamot oil as a gesture of thanks after one of Grey's men saved the mandarin's son from drowning.

Bergamot is a citrus fruit with a unique flavor profile, and its essential oil is extracted and used to flavour tea. The bergamot oil gives Earl Grey its distinctive citrusy and fragrant taste.

Some other theories suggest that the blend was created to offset the strong taste of minerals in the water at Howick Hall, Grey's estate. Choose your Earl Grey wisely and choose your story of preference and create your own Earl Grey journey.
